Global National: Oct. 25, 2020 | Federal facilitator in N.S. lobster dispute facing resistance

On this episode of Global National: Ottawa's attempts to broker peace in the Nova Scotia lobster dispute have hit a snag. Allister Surette, appointed federal facilitator between commercial and Indigenous fisheries, says he's ready to open a dialogue between the two sides. But as Ross Lord reports, he's facing resistance from Indigenous leaders.
And in Ontario, non-Indigenous counter-protesters disrupted a march by members of the Six Nations First Nation, as a heated land rights dispute over housing development in Caledonia, Ont. continues to escalate. As Morganne Campbell explains, there are calls for the federal and provincial governments to prioritize resolving these land claim issues.
Plus, New Democrats in British Columbia are celebrating after landing a historic victory in the province's first snap election during a pandemic, turning their minority government into a majority. Richard Zussman breaks down the huge payoff for Premier John Horgan's bold political gamble.
As mail-in and advance votes surge in provincial elections during the pandemic, Canada's chief electoral officer is pressing parliament to change the country's elections law, as more and more Canadians avoid election day. David Akin looks at how the new voting trends could permanently change campaigns forever.
Five aides to US Vice President Mike Pence have tested positive for COVID-19, including his chief of staff, Marc Short. But officials say Pence himself has tested negative for the virus and will push forward with a busy campaign schedule, with a little more than a week left before the Election Day. Jennifer Johnson reports.
Despite his demonization of Mexican and Central American migrants entering the US over the last four years, President Donald Trump is getting significant levels of support from Latino voters in parts of the country - something that could help him get re-elected. Rob Malcolm spoke with one young Latino in rural America who's backing the president.
Also, it's been three years since dozens of staff at the Canadian embassy in Havana, Cuba were inflicted by the "Havana Syndrome,” which is a mysterious illness that gave them concussion-like symptoms. Now as Mike Drolet reports, new documents obtained by Global News may corroborate claims that employees were warned to stay silent on the unexplained phenomenon.

The fisheries and land problem are examples of the old saying “you can’t have your cake and eat it”. This resource and land issue is going to go on and on as FN seem to press for an apartheid country containing tribal independent areas with their own laws. The problem is not going to be resolved by an academic facilitator. It requires much higher level interaction and a rethink of Canada’s way ahead. Violence is not a desirable route for any of the parties.

this speaks to the way the government keeps chipping away at native lands. my people were given a chunk of land for supporting the british in the 1812 war, then in I believe it was 1922 some rich people wanted the land so the local and provincial police came in when the people wouldn't move the police burned the community to the ground leaving the people in the winter snows with only what they could carry. pure evil but that is who the canadian elites and governments are.

Look into it further, they are fishing in a closed bay that both white and native fishers agreed to years ago to sustain the fishery, now some of them are fishing there under the sustenance rules but are selling them, the lobster are molting and are vulnerable then also fished out very easily, this was established years ago and has proven to work. Everyone wants to right away side with wrongdoings without checking into it.

@Nicholas T Benefits that we never asked for , that were just bestowed upon us to separate us from the rest of Canadians like Residential Schools separated us from the rest of society 1870s - 1970s ,We were once a strong people that could survive in the woods, throw us in the woods today & we' d need a rescue team to get us out. We are a conquered broken people, but our ancestors spirits are still here ,still strong, they'll help us find a way thru this storm.

    • Nicholas T

      Nicholas T

      महिन्यापूर्वी

@FirstNationsMovies At the end of the day, that's still a benefit that other people don't get. While I sympathize for you and your family because you may not have been able to take full advantage of the benefits you have compared to other First Nations peoples, my point still stands that these things are exclusively for First Nations. Hundreds of Chinese died building the railway for the benefit of the country. After the work was completed, the majority of us were not allowed to stay, those that did stay had to pay a hefty "Head Tax." Today, the Chinese are treated like any other Canadian. There's no special benefits for us, there's no leniency for us despite the injustices my people faced. My parents were poor immigrants from Hong Kong who actually OWED thousands of dollars because they decided to do highschool here. My parents suffered under discrimination as well because English wasn't their first language. (In fact if you look up Carole Bell [mayor of Markham] you'll see she was against having Chinese in the [then] Town of Markham). Yet despite the cards stacked against them, they came out on top and now made a comfortable living because they persevered instead of asking the government for more. My point isn't to play the who suffered the most game. It's to highlight the fact that equal treatment must really mean equality. Everybody has suffered some form of injustice whether it be through racism/sexism/religion/sexual orientation etc. We can all play the victim game and say the government owes us this... the government owes us that... or we could fight against the odds and succeed. If by illegal immigration you mean the mass amount of US refugee asylum seekers, then yes I agree with you. That's a lot of tax dollars that could be used to help Canadians... not for people lucky enough to get into a 1st world country in the first place... then leaving because they don't like who the president is.

@Nicholas T --payment of Indian moneys? My mom & sister get $100 tops a year, I have received nothing from Haidaii Gwaii. -Credit on gst hst on purchases : only reserve Indians get that privilege & how many stores are on reserve land to take advantage ,very few. -Tax exempt on reservations,: haven't been to my reservation...ever. -Exceptions on harvesting: only a few hundred Natives benefit from this ,the rest are average to poor poverty. -More support for post education? Only made it to grade 8 as has my mom & father, plenty racist ready to stop a Native child from succeeding ,my sister who graduated had a teacher ,a principle & a Native support teacher all against her from graduating . she had to go thru adult education to finally get her diploma. -court house leniency? I've had lots of racists in my life pick a fight with me, I've always turned the other cheek, so leniency in the courthouse doesn't benefit me in any way. What is a problem in Canada is illegal immigration ,hopefully that hole gets fixed so we don't have to deal with more people stealing opportunities away from the First Nations people of this country.

    • Nicholas T

      Nicholas T

      महिन्यापूर्वी

@FirstNationsMovies Yes there are benefits exclusively for status "Indians." Some of those benefits include: - payment of "Indian" moneys - Credits on the GST/HST on goods you purchase - Tax exempt items on reservations (which includes gasoline) - Exemptions on harvesting limits (which is the cause of the current Mi' Kmaq conflict) - More government support for post secondary education - etc Even in the criminal justice system, First Nations peoples are given more leniency because of R. v Gladue. If a non status person violently assaulted someone they would get a harsher penalty than a First Nations offender; regardless of how disadvantaged the non status offender was. Compared to the average Canadian, I would consider THAT a benefit. If you don't think that's a benefit then I would urge you to convince your band to write to your member of parliament to ask that all Canadians receive the same benefits.

Its time Canada sets the record straits that FNs don't get special benefits. Its a lie so Natives can continue to suffer on reservations, oh its all the chiefs fault, well where's Trudue then breathing down the chiefs necks to straighten up? The whole system is against my people.

Not all are uneducated. Some of us actually take a look at the Democratic Party and realize the Republican Party protects a lot of rights that we, as Americans, hold dear. Republicans like myself like deregulation, like tax cuts, like small government interference in our lives... a vote against Trump is a vote against our beliefs and morals.

@Jaxxall No doubt. Capitalists certainly do want workers and the like scrapping it out with one another and as soon as the commercial fishers realize that no matter how much racist mythology they harbour, their enemy is the same as the Indigenous people they stubbornly target.

True. Thus why Indigenous people, although representing such a small portion of the population, end up being disproportionately incarcerated,harrassed/beat/tazed/shot by cops, end up homeless and are perpetually confronted with the most brutal forms of racism imaginable. So, sure, in a society like Canada where the legacy of residential schools, perpetual systematic displacement of Indigenous peoples, the continuous pitting of various bands against one another over scraps from the state from contracts for mining and oil extraction...in a society like this you will most certainly have a brutally disproportionate distribution of resources and thus a constant tension between the different sectors of the population.

Sorry , but not sorry. Dumping funds on somebody who hasn't contributed 1 work hr or 1 tax dollar ever is ludicrous. It's posturing.

Totally do not condone violence and arson, but the Indigenous people shouldn't be allowed to fish during the off season and sell as well... it's one thing to fish for sustenance and another to commercially fish (which is what they're doing).
The Mi’kmaq support the Wet'suweten in conservation and spoke out against the pipeline etc... so shouldn't they practice what they preach and not overfish... I mean if you're fishing commercially when it's the off season how long do you think the lobster population has until they're over harvested?

Put Sig Hanson on the board. Can you imagine a bunch of indigenous crab boats fishing off Alaska and the west coast out of season and what would happen if they were to even try. This is tiddly winks compared to a scenario like that. The local fishers in the east should stand there ground. Nothing like going out during the official season and catching nothing but baby lobsters that have to get thrown back or the worst outcome which is inevitable as the rules are now, no lobsters at all.

@Cougar2k that’s exactly it... they’re crying racism as soon as they can when they’re not telling the full story. The fishermen are pissed off because the government sets restrictions on harvesting seasons and amounts for everyone EXCEPT the First Nations peoples. The law was made that way with the intent that they would harvest as a means to sustain themselves and their traditional way of life NOT for them to make profit and undersell the competition who have strict guidelines they must abide by. Again I don’t support the actions of burning down a building or the fighting... but people need to see this isn’t simply just a “racist” attack.

I have a feeling that federal and provincial government keep kicking the can down the road, so the issue is not addressed and will only escalate further. I also feel like the public is not getting the full picture so there is lots of guess work or jumping to the wrong conclusion. The whole thing is akin to watching a bad drama series....
